Enduring Achievement Award

North Carolina State University Science House

Directed by Dr. Jason Painter, The Science House (TSH) was founded in 1991 by NC State University’s College of Sciences to provide innovative programs to K-12 STEM teachers and students across the state. TSH bridges the resources of North Carolina’s largest research institution with K-12 schools to empower scientific literacy and discovery. Its vision is “North Carolina teachers and students equipped to advance the sciences,” and its mission is to inspire and prepare future scientists and leaders. Below are brief descriptions of some of the most impactful programs The Science House currently offers.

  • North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a program with a mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public-school campuses across the state.
  • Catalyst is a national award-winning high school program designed to create STEM opportunities for students with disabilities. The primary goal of Catalyst is to provide students with the skills, knowledge and experiences they need to help build the STEM workforce of the future.
  • Imhotep Academy is a year-round middle school enrichment program that introduces students to the world of STEM with a particular emphasis on reaching underserved and students historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines.
  • The Mountain Satellite Office (MSO) is located at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC. The MSO serves teachers, students, school systems, and community stakeholders of Western North Carolina. The MSO promotes STEM education through teacher professional development, curriculum development, student engagement programs, and an equipment loan program.

Dr. Painter was also one of the key members of the team which created and runs the STIR (Strengthening the Impact of Research) program at NC State. This program provides training and professional development for NC State researchers to empower them in their BI and public engagement efforts.
