Research in Service to Society

The Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS) Summit in Baltimore, Maryland was held at the Baltimore Convention Center March 22-24. Participants engaged with the vibrant ARIS community around Research In Service to Society-themed events and networking opportunities. This was the first time since 2019 that we were able to meet in-person.

The Summit program includes three amazing keynote speakers, a panel discussion on broadening participation in computing featuring program officers from the National Science Foundation CISE directorate, and an extra-special opportunity to visit with members of the National Science Board about Broader Impacts in anticipation of the new merit review task force (PDF). The 2023 Awards Ceremony was held at the fascinating Maryland Science Center located in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

More great news for Summit attendees: those who registered for all three days of Summit 2023 will receive their inaugural year of an ARIS membership free.

⇒ If you are staying in the Baltimore Inner Harbor Hilton, you can get to the convention center through the hotel. From the second floor of the hotel, you can access a skywalk to get to the Baltimore Convention Center. Cross the skywalks over Eutaw Street, Howard Street and Sharp Street, past the outdoor terrace to the Charles Terrace Lobby on Level 300. All of our Summit meetings this week will be on Level 300.

Transportation

There is no airport shuttle to the Hilton. Below are some options.

Light Rail

Baltimore’s Light Rail system takes travelers from the airport to the hotel for less than $2 each way. The BWI Marshall Airport Light Rail Station is located immediately outside the lower level of the terminal building, adjacent to Concourse E. Exit at the Camden Yards station which will bring you to the front door of the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel.

Taxi Service from BWI

Taxi stands are located just outside of the baggage claim area on the Lower Level of the BWI Marshall Airport terminal near doors 5 and 13. Please note that this service is available from BWI Marshall Airport only. For cab service to BWI Marshall Airport, please consult the local cab company. BWI Marshall Airport taxicabs are prohibited from charging flat rates.

Ride Share from BWI

App-based ride services pick up and drop off passengers at the terminal curbs on the Upper Level/Departures. Fare and travel time ranges vary. Passengers should contact the ride service company for further details.
