Lisa Rom served as a Program Officer at the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Geosciences from 1988 to 2025. For most of her career, she managed ocean education programs for the Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE), including an undergraduate research internship program, the program for early career faculty, and a postdoctoral program. She was responsible for long-range planning for the Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE), a network of centers around the nation that connected ocean researchers with formal and informal educators. For the past decade, she also managed Arctic and Antarctic education programs for the Office of Polar Programs.

Prior to taking on OCE’s education programs in 1998, she managed shipboard technical programs and a radiocarbon dating facility for OCE. She earned a BS in geology from Vanderbilt University, an MS in marine geology from Duke University, and worked at the Joint Oceanographic Institutions Incorporated.
