Katie Shoaf

Appalachian State University

Katie Shoaf serves as the Associate Director of Grants Resources & Services in the Office of Research and Innovation at Appalachian State University. In this role, she provides strategic support for faculty across campus as they advance their scholarly agendas. This support includes helping researchers develop and submit proposals for targeted funding opportunities, managing internal review processes for internal competitions for intramural and extramural funding, and administering the faculty peer review process. She shares responsibilities with the Director to develop, design, and participate in programs to advance Appalachian State’s success in research, such as funding and grantsmanship workshops. She supports data and reporting efforts of the internal research investments of the institution to articulate the return on these investments and impacts to upper university administration.

Katie has an MA in Romance Languages, a Master of Library Science degree, and a graduate certificate in Rhetoric and Composition all from Appalachian State, and a BA in both English and Spanish. She is currently All But Dissertation (ABD) in a PhD in Leadership Studies program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she studies underrepresented faculty research experiences and how they intersect with the efforts of research management professionals. She will defend her dissertation in the fall semester of 2024 and graduate in December.

I’m excited to represent an Emerging Research Institution (ERI) and Predominantly Undergraduate Institution (PUI) while working with other Fellows from diverse institution types to help increase the reach and impact of the ORIC program. This is a great opportunity to shape the future of broader impacts work, and I’m honored to be part of it.
